PUBLIC WORKS DIRECTOR

                                                                        City of Temple, Georgia

 

The City of Temple, located in Carroll County, Georgia, along Interstate 20, is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Public Works Director.  The position is responsible for the overall administration, direction, maintenance, and operation of the Public Works function for the City of Temple, including streets, sidewalks, engineering services, the water distribution system, the sewerage collection system including lift stations, stormwater management, community beautification, City government buildings, and various construction projects.  The Public Works Director is a full-time FLSA exempt position.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  This individual must be capable of performing responsible professional, administrative, and technical work, as well as handling supervisory and engineering activities.  The Public Works Director delegates day-to-day assignments and activities to the department staff, but performs tasks requiring a high degree of skill and technical knowledge.  In accordance with the manpower resources on any given day and in accordance with challenges which arise from time to time, the director must be willing and able to work in the field alongside other staff members.  Ability to operate certain public works tools and equipment is not required, but preferred.  In addition to a “regular work day” and a “regular work week”, the director may need to work some weekends, nights, and holidays; work may be during bad weather conditions.  

The Public Works Director is expected to contribute importantly to short-term and long-range planning in the City of Temple’s capital improvements program and for various public works projects.  This person is responsible for the initial preparation of the department’s annual budget and for operating within the department’s budget limits throughout the fiscal year.  This director is expected to exercise independent judgment and to employ  discretion, while following City ordinances, policies, and procedures.  Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with the City’s elected officials, other staff members, and the general public.  Within the City of Temple government structure, the Public Works Director reports to the City Administrator.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:  High School Diploma or GED equivalent, with 2-4 years of Higher Education, preferably in the field of Management or Public Relations, supplemented by a minimum of three to five years of progressively responsible experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.  Minimum of three years of supervisory experience in public works.  Very good customer service skills, with relevant experience.  Must have a good knowledge of computers and basic programs, and the ability to operate basic equipment in a public works department.  Valid Georgia driver’s license.  Ability to review construction plans for the type of projects identified in the opening paragraph above. 

SALARY:  The salary is negotiable based on qualifications and experience.  The salary range is: $47,840 to $74,526. The City of Temple offers employee benefits such as medical, dental, life insurance, disability insurance, paid sick and vacation leave, and pension benefits upon qualifying for them.
